January 2024 Character Creation Challenge – Part 25

Day 25, back to Vaesen for another Thursday’s Child. The final character for this game, Gustav Svensson a Vagabond.

The basics for Gustav’s personality came from the chosen options from the Archetypes page of the core book. Avenging fallen family and seeing a revenant rise from it’s grave were combined into avenging fallen comrades that rose from the grave. This tied into Henriksson’s characters men rising from the dead, so the idea to make Svensson one of the few men from his unit that survived.

Overall, Vaesen’s character creation is as straightforward as other variations of the Year Zero Engine. I am always impressed by how it shakes out for each game, with specific tweaks for the genre.

And that’s it for Vaesen, as the month approaches it’s end. I’ll probably do another Free League game next year to see how the system fits with whatever I pick.

Tomorrow’s Fallout character is Grimm, a super mutant who hits incredibly hard.

Day 18 and Vaesen again. Today’s character is Wilhelmina Brodd, a private detective.

Wilhelmina is another character whose motivation is exposing the truth, but in her case it’s for profit.

I see the back story selections being linked together. The werewolf she came face to face with was the member of a rich family that hired her to investigate the mysterious happenings on their land. However on uncovering the truth they decided to put an end to her rather than one of their own, covering up the family secret. So now she operates under an false name, trying to avoid those wishing to claim the price for making her disappear.

Again another very quick build, as Free League systems tend to be, whilst having plenty of substance to the generated character.

Next week’s Vasen character is Gustav Svensson a vagabond. Tomorrow’s Fallout character is Handy Dan the Handyman, a Mr.Handy robot construction worker.

Day 11, and another Thursday’s Child for Vaesen. This week gives us Josephine Naslund, an academic.

“I turned into a rat… I got better”

The main idea behind Josephine was a pure academic, pretty much solely focussed on gathering knowledge after her initial run in with the supernatural. I see her as someone with very little practical experience, but a lot of knowledge and research skills. Now determined to use those skills to uncover more.

Again, very easy to throw together as Free League games tend to be.

Next week’s Vaesen character is Wilhelmina Brodd, a private detective. Tomorrow’s character is Duncan Disorderly, Ghoul medic and merchant for Fallout.

January 2024 Character Creation Challenge – Part 4

Thursday is for Thursday’s Children, the name given to the player characters in Vaesen. I was wondering what game to use for this day and then Free League gave the PDF of Vaesen away for free on Halloween. After seeing the PC name I had to use this one, what with my thing for daily themes. Also this fills my required quota of Free Leagu games for the challenge, I must have one.

Our first character is Maximillian Henriksson a former military officer.

As ever Free League games are a joy to build for, simple allocation of points and picking a few options to fill things out and you get a well fleshed out character.

The most challenging this was coming up with relationships with the other characters. None of which were built at the time, other than a career choice. to spoil thing slightly they are an Academic, a Private Detective, and a Vagabond.

I see Maximillian (never Max) as a haunted figure whose first run in with the supernatural was seeing his own men rise from the battlefield where they had fallen and turn against him. Only he and Gustav Svensson, the Vagabond, survived. This has left him with a lot of things to work through, putting it mildly.

Next week’s Vaesen character is Josephine Naslund, and Academic. Tomorrow is Fallout Friday where we meet the Vault Dweller Ernest Barker.
